What "AthenaHealth Integration" Actually Means

Not all AI scribe integrations are created equal. There are three levels:

1. Copy-paste (basic): The AI generates a note in a separate window or app. You copy it and paste it into Athena. This works but adds friction to every encounter.
2. API push (standard): The AI sends the generated note directly into the Athena encounter note. You review and edit in Athena. This is the minimum acceptable integration for daily use.
3. Embedded (premium): The AI lives inside Athena itself. No app switching, no separate windows. The documentation workflow never leaves the EHR.

Most third-party scribes offer level 2 (API push). Athena's built-in scribe offers level 3 (embedded). The question is whether the embedded convenience of Athena's own tool outweighs the superior documentation quality of third-party options.

Freed AI: The Most Developed Third-Party Athena Integration

Freed has invested heavily in its AthenaHealth integration. Per its documentation, the note is pushed directly into the correct encounter section in Athena, mapped to the right note template fields. In our assessment it is the most complete third-party AthenaHealth integration among the tools we compared.

Specific strengths:

• Supports Athena's structured data fields, not just free-text blocks
• Medication and order suggestions from the note can be confirmed within Athena without retyping

Heidi Health: Solid Integration, Lower Price

Heidi's AthenaHealth integration covers the essentials, though in our assessment it is less refined than Freed's. Notes are pushed into Athena encounters, but the field mapping is occasionally less granular — some Athena template sections may receive combined content that you need to split manually.

For practices where budget matters most and encounters are relatively straightforward, Heidi's Athena integration is more than adequate. The free-to-$99/month pricing makes it the most affordable option with real Athena integration.

Nabla: Strong Integration with Pre-Charting Bonus

Nabla's AthenaHealth integration includes a feature unique among competitors: pre-charting that pulls data from Athena before the encounter. The AI reads the patient's recent labs, medication list, and problem list from Athena and uses that context when drafting the note. Whether the extra context yields a better note than a tool without pre-charting is exactly the sort of claim we have not tested.

The note push-back to Athena works well, with good field mapping across template sections. The pre-charting feature is particularly valuable for complex patients with long histories — the AI already knows the context when the encounter starts.

Nabla no longer publishes pricing (quote-based as of 2026-08-07), which makes a direct cost comparison with Freed or Heidi impossible from public data — but it delivers more value for practices with complex patients.

DeepScribe: Reliable Integration, Specialty Advantage

DeepScribe's AthenaHealth integration is solid and reliable, with notes pushed into the correct encounter sections. Where DeepScribe adds value beyond basic integration is its specialty-specific documentation — if your practice is cardiology, dermatology, or orthopedics on AthenaHealth, DeepScribe's specialty models produce notes that generic scribes cannot match.

The integration setup takes a few hours rather than minutes, but once configured it runs smoothly.

Athena AI Scribe: Embedded but Early

AthenaHealth has launched its own built-in AI scribe. The integration advantage is obvious: zero setup, no separate vendor, no API configuration. The AI scribe is embedded directly in the Athena encounter workflow.

The limitation: it is still early. As a newer product, Athena's built-in scribe has had less time to mature than dedicated scribes like Freed or Nabla. We have not tested its note quality, and Athena publishes little about how it handles complex encounters — that is the thing to scrutinize if you try it.

If you are on AthenaHealth and want the absolute simplest option with no additional vendor, the built-in scribe is worth trying — it is bundled with your existing Athena subscription. But the dedicated scribes have a multi-year head start, and nothing we found suggests Athena's built-in option has closed that gap yet.
